Older Islanders helped to stay active and independent

Dec 4, 2025

A new health programme to help people aged 65 and over maintain their independence, mobility and wellbeing has launched, thanks to a grant from the Guernsey Community Foundation.

REACT (REtirement in ACTion) is an evidence-based initiative designed for older people facing early mobility issues. It was developed by UK universities and community health organisations, and brought to Guernsey by the Health Improvement Commission.

The programme, which begins in early 2026, will provide regular classes that combine tailored strength, balance and mobility exercises with education on healthy ageing. The group classes also encourage social connection and improve confidence.

REACT reflects the Foundation’s aim to improve quality of life across the Bailiwick, especially for those most in need. The funding for REACT will enable the Health Improvement Commission to train two local instructors to deliver the programme.

Applications are now open for the first cohort of REACT participants, with healthcare professionals also able refer their patients.
